Question: B- (and others)...What do you do to develop the way your band plays? More specifically, how do you go about developing your group to get away from the "Head-solo-head" shit all of the time. It's a big challenge (especially in a quartet or trio with a horn) to make your group not sound like it's always having a jam session...ya know what I mean? I guess a 2nd part of this question is...I have been really making an effort to make my solos more through composed, while still maintaining the intensity and spontanaety as a soloist. What are some of the ways in which you develop your ideas and make your solos one cohesive entity, like they are really going some place and adding to the music, rather than sounding like your just blowing over some changes?
Branford's Answer: In addition to listening to records of musicians who practice that philosophy, I was always conscious of my desire to play that way. You have to tell youself that you want to avoid all of that cliched shit. And wait for it to happen. I can take years. It did for us. But throughout those years, we were always conscious of what we wanted to sound like.
